Time-controlled cluster shutdown: How to save cloud infrastructure costs

We are excited to announce that with the latest update to 1.4.0, there is a new feature in qibb ultimate. Saving cloud infrastructure costs just became that much easier! In this article we want to take a deeper look into the new functionality and show you how you can save costs by shutting down cloud resources fully time-controlled and automated.

New Feature: Automatic Cluster Shutdown and Restart

A hybrid or multicloud approach is saving companies of all sizes time, stress and money. In addition, it offers optimal conditions to meet the increasing requirements for dynamic, modern and flexible IT.

However, when it comes to cost savings, simply replacing your on-premises infrastructure with cloud IaaS and then running it all day long 24/7 will most likely not lead to a noticeable result. That is simply because one of the biggest advantages of cloud computing is the ability to scale operations according to one´s business needs. In other words, you only pay for what you actually use. To reduce costs, cloud resources should be used as efficiently as possible.

A significant opportunity to reduce infrastructure costs comes by rightsizing your cloud resources. One way is to temporarily shut down clusters for non-mission critical systems such as test and staging systems.

With the update to 1.4.0, shutting down the cluster and then restarting it can now be done automatically at specific times.

Ready-to-use Templates for CI/CD Pipeline

With qibb ultimate, you can shut down clusters overnight or over the weekend and restart them at the beginning of the next business day or whenever you like. The clusters are automatically restarted with all necessary components and applications.

For such use cases, qibb ultimate now provides ready-to-use templates for the CI/CD pipeline. A CI/CD pipeline automates your software delivery process. The pipeline builds code, runs tests (CI – Continuous Integration) and safely deploys a new version of the application (CD – Continuous Development).

The automated pipelines remove manual errors and enable fast, standardized cluster deployments. Such pipelines also provide feedback loops to developers and enable fast product iterations.

Visualization of individual clusters

The status of the individual clusters can be visualized directly in the user interface but also in 3rd party applications like Microsoft Teams.
